Marc Vael is Chief Audit Executive (CAE) at Smals vzw, a Belgian not-for-profit IT services organization located in Brussels with more than 1,800 people working for the Belgian federal government, especially for social security departments. In this role, Marc is responsible for all internal auditing activities reporting directly to the Audit committee of Smals vzw.
Marc obtained a Master degree in Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp in 1989, a Master degree in Information Management at the University of Hasselt in 1990 and a Doctorandus degree in Applied Economics & IT at the KU Leuven in 1991. During his professional career, Marc obtained certifications in IT audit (CISA), information security (CISM and CISSP), IT risk management (CRISC), IT service management (ITIL service manager) and project management (Prince2) and still maintains these through continuous professional education.
Marc has more than 20 years of experience in evaluating, designing, implementing and monitoring solutions on risk and information security management, incident and business continuity management, data protection/privacy, and IT audit.
Besides his full-time job as Chief Audit Executive, Marc is a member and an active volunteer at ISACA, the global not-for-profit knowledge association with more than 100.000 members and 190 chapters in 75 countries and focused on IT audit, IT risk, IT governance and information security. Marc is since June 2012 elected as international vice-president of ISACA International. Marc was since June 2011 chair of ISACA’s Knowledge Board and the Cloud Computing Task Force and member of ISACA’s Strategic Advisory Council. In April 2012 Marc got elected president of the ISACA Belgium Chapter as well. He is also lecturing as a guest professor at Antwerp Management School (AMS) since 1997 and Solvay Brussels School since 2004 a program around IT audit, IT risk and information security. Marc is also a deputy member of the Flemish Privacy Commission since January 2010 and a member of the Permanent Stakeholder Group of ENISA since August 2012.

The CONFENIS 2012 Conference is a joint effort of the Economic Council for East Flanders, the Ghent University and the IFIP TC8 Working Group 8.9 on Enterprise Information Systems.
The sixth International Conference on Research and Practical Issues of Enterprise Information Systems, CONFENIS 2012, will be held in Ghent, Belgium, September 19-21, 2012. CONFENIS, The Enterprise Information Systems International Conference on Research and Practical Issues of EIS, is a primary international event of the IFIP TC8 Working Group 8.9. This event provides an opportunity for academicians and practitioners throughout the world to gather, exchange ideas, and present original research in the field of enterprise information systems. Scientists and professionals are invited to address the current research topics in the area or the research frontier at this unique international forum.
Accepted papers will be published as full or short papers in a Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP) volume by Springer. Chairman of the conference is prof. dr. Geert Poels, Professor in the rank of Senior lecturer, Department of Management Information and Operations Management, Ghent University.
